Tangy blueberries add a fresh burst of flavour in this summertime staple. This sauce is uniquely balanced by fresh pops of tart blueberry and sweet thick molasses. For your next barbecue, instead of running to the store, whip up a homemade batch of maple blueberry barbecue sauce in just a few minutes.
For an ideal cookout, I’m a huge fan of creating hand formed veggie patties from scratch, grilling Indian street corn, and whipping up a quick batch of sweet and spicy vegan potato salad. When it comes to vegan and vegetarian barbecue, it really is all about the sauce. Most grill cooks know that you’re nothing without a great sauce recipe tucked in your back pocket. As summertime classics go, homemade barbecue sauce is really the ultimate showstopper, and this maple blueberry barbecue sauce takes the cake.
This sauce is super easy to whip up and definitely satisfying. It has a unique flavour profile, but still has that classic thick and sweet taste that you’ve come to expect from a good barbecue. I think it would be an excellent marinade on chicken or burgers, but if you’re really looking to impress, try it on something vegetarian.
Try maple blueberry barbecue brushed over some summer veggie kabobs or served with piping hot sweet potato fries. I think it would actually be kind of amazing on some hot street corn…this is definitely one recipe to experiment with this summer.
Maple Blueberry Barbecue Sauce

- 2 tbs. ketchup
- 1 tsp. molasses
- 2 tsp. maple syrup
- 1/4 tsp. salt, kosher
- 1/4 tsp. garlic powder
- fresh cracked pepper
Mix all ingredients in a small pan. A few minutes of stirring over low heat will fully incorporate the powdered spices. This recipe yields about 1/4 cup of sauce. Maple blueberry barbecue sauce perfectly compliments sweet potato fries and would be yummy brushed over a vegetarian burger patty.
